Connections

Not having connections

Not all characters have significant relationships. A character with a humble or isolated backstory might lack allies, influencing social encounters. This is valid and can create opportunities for growth and storytelling.

Positive or negative

Connections can be beneficial (allies, mentors, influential friends) or detrimental (rivals, enemies, former cults). Both add stakes to the story. For example, a connection with a noble may grant access to resources, while a hostile cult may actively hinder progress.

With who

The importance of a connection depends on who it is. A shopkeeper may offer minor benefits, while a powerful NPC can dramatically affect story events. DMs use these connections to create meaningful interactions and plot hooks.

How can the DM use it

DMs incorporate connections by introducing NPCs or scenarios tied to your relationships. This can lead to unique quests, moral dilemmas, or story twists. Well-crafted connections make the world feel alive and responsive to your character.
